Laser Eye Surgery?
I have been wearing glasses/contacts since i was 10, I am now 20 and am considering laser eye surgery. My perscription worsened but has been the same for about five years now. What are the risks?

- ive heard that it can wear off ( not possitive) and i guessing its hurts and its v expensive
- Sometimes i hear it does not get corected and you still have to wear glasses
- I had this done about 10 years ago and its the best thing I have done! I used to work at one of the leading clinics and had the treatment for free!! I think I would have paid for it anyway. Every medical procedure has risks and these are explained during your consultation. However, they are rare. The worst experience I got was my eyes felt like they had grit in them, but this only lasted about 18 hours or so. There's a six month gap between each eye treatment. If you do have it done - GOOD LUCK!!
- Risk is, that if you have laser treatment at such a young age, the next time you might need it, it will be no option anymore. It`s more or less a one shot deal. You can`t go back over and over again just because you`re fed up wearing glasses. Being a popular procedure does not mean risks have been eliminated. Stay informed and never stop asking!
- My sister wore glass,s since she was 8, she 36 now and got laser surgery last year, she was told she was a good candidate for surgery due to her perscription worsening, after surgery she was in a bit of pain since their was more tissue behind her eye, but a day later she was fine, now she has excellent vision and i mean that its better than 20/20 its that good, have a chat with a consultant but whatever you choose, go with a clinic that has a good reputation, there are many out there who aren,t as good as they claim, lol.
- All these other people can tell you the risks, and what I've seen so far is true, it might not work etc. etc. But the chances of it happening are minuscule, I reckon you should go for it. I've had glasses for a while now and I want to do surgery and be able to wake up seeing clearly and not just because I slept in my contacts. The people carrying out these operations have all had training and everything. They know what they're doing and you're going to have a consultation to assess your eyes and see if it's suitable right? They're not going to do it, if they don't think it's gonna work. So go have a consultation, see what the experts say and then have a think on it.
- i had this done when i was 11 or 12. i am now 16 and i think i really appreciate what the doctors did for me. i was wearing glasses since 1st and was going into 7th when i had the surgery done. i was scared but what 12year old wouldnt be. when i got out of the hospital my mom took me home and i laid on the couch for about 3 or 4 days. my best friends helen and ashley kept me busy either taking turns or being together. the only bad thing about it is every summer we go camping at my favorite camp ground. they have a swimming lake which i LOVE and a pool that they just put in that im not too fond of. i was bummed because i wasnt allowed to do any heavy swimming or diving. my mom went out and got some really good goggles but i still wasnt allowed to go under the water. but it was totally worth it. i now have 20/20 vision and brag about it all the time!! im so glad my mom made me do this. i had a really bad prescription just as the one youre talking about. i was cross eyed and farsighted and it just got worse everytime i went to see the doctor. i hope you decide that if this is right for you youll do it. good luck and let me know how you do!!
- I have only heard of people having great experiences with laser corrective surgery. I had a leaking vessel behind my right eye and they did laser surgery and sealed the leak. There are a lot of great advances for us out there today, it's been around for a while and I have never heard anybody have a bad experience. That's not to say that there isn't any, I just haven't heard any. Being able to see good is a wonderful thing!
- I've hear alot of positive reactions to the laser surgery. ONe possible side effect that I know of is it can in some cases cause severe aberrations, which can distort the way your eyes see light. It apparently can make night driving almost impossible, depending on it's severity. We have a patient at my office that had the laser corrective surgery and suffered from this side effect, and he can't drive at night because the glare from oncoming headlights is so extreme. But I don't know how often or in how many cases this occurs. I would consult with your optometrist and just ask what some of the risk factors are
