Lasik surgery through the military?
I'm in the Navy, serving in the reserves. My vision is less than perfect. I want to get Lasik surgery. I've heard of the military giving Lasik surgery to soldiers going overseas. I've asked around at my local command but no one seems to know anything. Does anyone know where or how I can get the military to perforn the procedure? Thank you.

- Wow, first for me. Well, IF its available, and you need to find someone who knows something about it, Find the chain of command in the medical field. Ask the ranking officer in you're medical unit (TMC? I was in the Army, so I don't know the Navy command structure.) What command unit is above that would know if such a program existed, then write the commanding officer of that unit. I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear here. I tell you what, print out this and show it to your medical officer, he'll see what I'm trying to tell you. Go ahead and write me back at James_Fergason@Yahoo.com if I can do anything. James
- You have heard correctly. They offer lasik and PRK surgery to active duty personnel, but it isn't just for those going overseas. I know that the surgeries are performed at Balboa and Norfolk and various marine bases, but the referal must come from the parent command. I'm not sure if reserves are offered the surgery unless they are on active status. That is something to address with the medical officer. Good Luck.
- I check into it my self, and currenlty they are only offering the Soldiers in Combat MOSs
- Yes they do offer it, however I'm not too sure about reserve side, I'm pretty sure it's the same if your unit is activated, meaning you are going overseas. Either way there is a waiter for list for you to get it even if you don't go over seas, if you unit gets activated then you get moved to the top of the list to be the first one done. Find and on-base hospital and ask them about it if you can, cause that's where you will get it done at and you'll hear it from the horses mouth.
