Lasik Eye Correction

can i get eye surgery to become a military pilot?

i wish to become a helicopter/fixed wing pilot/navigator. 1) is it true that any kind of corrective eye surgery disqualifies you? even for US Army helicopter pilot? 2) which one would be a better choice? rotary wing or fixed wing? 3) whats the process to becoming a flight officer? i want to go through the ROTC program during college thank you for all answers! which service should i fly with if i could choose?

  1. 1) Yes 2) depends on you 3) that is a good start
  2. 1) No, but you would have to see about a time you should get the surgery, PRK is preferred, but I believe Lasik is ok for helos only (if you need the surery, then probably not qualified for fixed wing) 2) depends on which you prefer 3)I'm in NROTC--- Attend college or academy, get good grades, service select aviation or NFO, get degree and commission, ship out to flight school. Look up more specs up if fyou want, just search ROTC in google
  3. The Navy will not take prior eye surgery unless it's done by the Navy... problem is, you have to be in the Navy already to have the surgery
  4. 1. That is not true. You are not disqualified, it is waiverable. 2. For Army Aviation, you must first complete rotary wing training & based on needs of the Army, MAY get fixed wing transition. THIS IS RARE. Most apply for fixed wing transition later on in their flying career. 3. ROTC is a good way to go, but doesn't necessarily guarantee you will get flight training. If you want to become a helicopter pilot, a good way to do it is to go Warrant Officer. You can apply for WOFT (warrant officer flight training) as a civilian & if selected will go to Basic Training, Warrant Officer Candidate School & Flight Training. This will guarantee your spot in the flight program. Here is a link to check out, it goes over some requirements: http://www.usarec.army.mil/hq/warrant/WOoverview.html#AFAST%20Locations
