Lasik Eye Correction

Eye laser surgery, any long term results yet?

Has there been any tests on Eye laser correction, and is there anyone on here whose had it done some years ago? Like many things where we find out at a later date all is not as good as it seems, i just wonder if there has been any evidence to say that it causes long term damage, an increase in eye diseases or other problems, etc. Could we find out that after 15 years it causes eye cancer for example? I'm undecided to go for this, my sight is reasonable and i could live with it unless it gets much worse.

  1. This is exactly what i would like to know, my eyes are getting very bad, but as it is fairly new id rather wait 10 years to see if there is any long term problems. i watched how its done on you tube, it dont look good! i was very up for having it done until i saw the clip of how its done.
  2. Lasik surgery has been around for many years now, and has proven to provide stable results over several years (some as far as ten years out). It is a very safe procedure as long as it is done by a good surgeon. Don't go to the "mills" where they run you in and out, go to an Ophthalmologist who will do the surgery and see you for all of your post operative care. As far as causing cancer, it definitely will not induce cancer. The only tissue the laser affects is the cornea, which does not ever develop cancers. Other diseases of the eye have not been associated with Lasik, however, if you do have a pre existing eye disease the surgeon will simply tell you that you aren't a good candidate. Very few surgeons will perform surgery if they aren't confident they can give you a good result.
  3. Depending on each individual situation, many have found the procedure to be extremely beneficial and others have found that the negative side-effects don't outweigh the positive effects of better vision. However, laser eye surgery certainly won't cause cancer, it only deals with the reshaping of your cornea and you can't get cancer of the cornea because cornea is not a tissue. There is a good San Diego Lasik website. It has lots of info and some very informative Lasik articles.
