Lasik Eye Correction

eye correction and the marines?

I don't have perfect vision, and i would rather get laser surgery than get glasses, but I read somewhere that if you have corrected your eyes with laser surgery you cannot be accepted in the marines/navy. Is this true? Question: does the fact that you have had laser eye surgery affect your elegibility to join the marines?

  1. this is 100% false! i am in the Navy right now and had corrective ( i chose PRK over lasik ) surgery performed by the military. you should look into the types. i wore glasses for 15 years and the surgery was the best thing i have ever done.
  2. Laser surgery approval with the military is dependent upon two factors: The type of duty you wish to perform in the USMC and the type of surgery you either require or choose to have performed. Here's a link that lists the various duty requirements with various laser surgery types. I dunno if I would accept a website without a .gov at the end as the holy gospel, but it certainly supports the idea that the military is open to options with this. Any USMC recruiter would know for sure.
  3. I was in the Marines for 14 years. I still have friends and good understanding of this. The military itself is now providing laser surgery for the armed forces. Years ago, the military did frown as the procedure was new and there were error here and there. Now this procedure is so common the military performs it as well. I had the surgery 2 years ago and I think it is one of the best things I have had in my adult life.
